Nicolas Birrer — Creative Coder & Visual Communication Designer

UFS is a webbased tool designed to showcase the Unica Font Family, using april tags as a physical input, it allows the users to collaboratively design stickers. This project was developed with Robin Schneider (lead art direction & typography) and Nicolas Birrer (lead code structure & Interaction).

Klostergärten Schweiz is documenting every monastery in Switzerland. The book comes out in 2028. The identity is generative, so you can see just how many there are: every mark works the same way, but each one looks a little different. The logo picks up a camera metapher, for the act of documenting the gardens. Four openings sit parallel to the circle and make a soft cross.

For the annual celebration of the Basel Music Academy, I worked as a freelancer in collaboration with AnDico Lab Basel to develop the key visual for the digital invitation. Using the academy’s fonts and colors, I created a unique interactive visual language that perfectly captures the interplay and rhythm of music.

My bachelor thesis was about JavaScript classes. In code they look like this: ClassName { methods() {} }. I picked up that shape for the documentation site and used it to wrap the content. The animations show how classes live as separate instances, each with its own parameters. The subcategories inside an instance work like the methods in a class.

For the Basel Academy of Arts foyer Civic, I created an interactive web application in Unity with 3D models made with Blender. Dynamic materials and rotation highlight the space's constant transformation.

This graphical tool was developed using the p5.js JavaScript library. Designed for the desktop 16:9 format, it is web-based. It is an open-source project. This type manipulation tool quickly becomes very abstract, opening up a whole new horizon of graphic compositions.

Stickbug Studio is a kit for building beetles by sticking the pieces together. All of the parts are 3D-printed. I used the silhouettes of the individual pieces to design a poster and created a stop-motion animation to demonstrate how to use the product.

Catapult is an organization that supports youth projects in Basel, Switzerland. Using Blender's character rigging tool, I designed an animated poster. The characters form letters. Due to its modularity, it can be used as a complete identity and adapted to different formats.

For StrubExtrud, I developed a digital identity based on abstract shapes inspired by 3D printers. To bring the entire identity together, I developed an animated key visual with CSS animations to render the vectors sharply in the browser.
